The Inspiration The concept for this work was born from the ancient Cossack custom of carrying a bag of earth when going to war. This practice served as a tangible link to their homeland, a physical reminder of what they were fighting for. In my case, as a refugee fleeing conflict, these bags of earth became my own carriers of memory. The Creation Process To create this piece, I carefully collected soil from my parents' yard, knowing I would be leaving behind not just a place, but a part of my identity. I placed the earth in bags, each one labeled with the exact coordinates of our family property. This act of collection and labeling was both a practical measure and a ritual, imbuing each bag with profound emotional significance. The Journey As I embarked on my journey as a refugee, these bags of earth became my constant companions. They traveled with me through numerous countries, a physical burden that represented the weight of my memories and the ties to my homeland that I refused to sever. Each border crossing, each new temporary home, was marked by the presence of these humble yet meaningful objects. The Final Installation The installation now resides in England, where I have found refuge. The bags of earth are displayed as both artifacts and art, inviting viewers to contemplate the complex emotions of displacement, nostalgia, and the unbreakable bonds to one's roots. The coordinates inscribed on each bag serve as a silent testament to the specific place I left behind, while the earth itself embodies the essence of home that I carry with me. Through "Memory Carrier," I aim to convey the universal experience of refugees and displaced persons, highlighting the emotional and psychological impact of being uprooted. It stands as a testament to resilience, the power of memory, and the enduring connection between people and place, even in the face of conflict and separation
